To Rieserferner-Refuge

Last summer we visited the Rieserferner-Refuge (2792 m above sea level) situated at the feed of the big glaciers Magerstein, Schneebiger Nock and Schwarze Wand.

It was a beautiful excursion and a wonderful day in the hut, so that we want to share it with you.

We started our excursion some kilometers before you get to Rein in Taufers in Tauferer Ahrntal Valley, a valley on the left of Pustertal Valley in South Tyrol. Look at the markers and park at left side of the street when the many hairpin bends stop. Here begins path 3, which has lead us first through a beautiful wood with many brooks and smaller waterfalls.

Than we reached two big mountain pastures, where we saw a lot of marmots and chamois. After 3,5 hours of not difficult walking we finally get to the Rieserferner-Refuge where the host "Gottl" Leitgeb expected us, with some typical South Tyrolean specialties like barley soup, sausages and a big piece of apple strudel.

After some hours of relax in the refuge, we went back to our car. We needed about 2 hours to get there. It was a beautiful day.
